Orleans History

Place du Martroi

Just a few minutes' walk from the Hotel Marguerite, the Place du Martroi is one of Orléans' most beautiful squares. It's also a place steeped in history and a center of economic and public life. It was successively a wheat market, the site of the guillotine and the scene of many public gatherings. In addition to the statue of Joan of Arc, you'll find the former Chancellery of Philippe Duc d'Orléans and a trapdoor leading down to the ancient Gallo-Roman walls of Orléans.

Joan of Arc statue

Joan of Arc is inextricably linked with Orléans. The Joan of Arc statue is less than 8 minutes from the Hôtel Marguerite on the Place du Martroi. Just a stone's throw away, you can continue your tour with a visit to the Maison de Jeanne d'Arc. This half-timbered house is a reconstruction of the home of Jacques Boucher, general treasurer to the Duke of Orléans, where Joan of Arc stayed during the siege of Orléans.

Holy Cross Cathedral

Sainte-Croix Cathedral is located at the end of Rue Jeanne d'Arc, a 10-minute walk from the Hôtel Marguerite. This imposing Gothic edifice dominates the old town and is one of the 5 largest Gothic cathedrals in France. A place steeped in history, where Jeane d'Arc, Henri IV and Louis XIV passed through.
